After struggling with her weight since she was young, Rachael was beginning to feel hopeless. But the structure and support from Jenny Craig helped her turn her lifestyle around. 

Rachael wrote down all the times she’d tried to lose weight over the years. Having always struggled with her weight and limited knowledge of healthy eating and portion control, she’d made 15 attempts at various diets and nothing worked.

“I was completely helpless. I had been trying to lose weight for my entire adult life,” she says.

“I didn’t know what to do or where to seek help.”

At 145.8kg, Rachael says she was experiencing “health niggles” that she knew would turn into bigger issues down the track if they went unaddressed.

“I had also been notified by doctors that I needed to lose weight and improve my health,” she recalls.

“My health is a big ‘why’ for me.”

In September 2019, Rachael got engaged, which she says felt like a switch being flicked. With the date set for a year away, she decided that “I wanted to have my choice in wedding dress, not just whatever would fit.”

This sort of sentiment isn’t unique to Rachael’s story, either. 35 percent in a survey of more than 1000 said they want to feel confident in front of friends, while 34 percent are looking to fit into old clothes (2021 Jenny Craig Health Report).

The next month, Rachael joined Jenny Craig; it completely changed her perception of diet and exercise, opening her world to fruits and vegetables that she’d never tried before.

She also committed to exercising, starting off “by making a commitment to exercise three times a week and slowly build up to daily exercise.”

Armed with a diet plan and exercise regime, Rachael was on track. COVID was a bit of a setback, as it was for the 73 percent of Australians who are planning on losing weight in 2021, but she was determined to not let it crush her goals. Rather, she embraced the closure of gyms to start running, with a goal to complete 5km. She does it weekly now and 14 months into her weight loss journey, Rachael has lost 58.3kg.

“I began working towards losing 10kgs, then 20kgs, 30kgs, 40kgs, 50kgs and now I’m working towards 60kgs weight loss,” she says.

“I cannot believe how unreal it is to be where I am. I’m still living off the high of reaching 50kgs, a whole adult! It blows my own mind. Something I never dreamed possible.”

Rachael is now working out six to seven times a week and really enjoys the diversity of meals offered by her program.

She says her success can be attributed to the level of support that she never had before, but while the longevity of weight loss was once a mental barrier, now she feels unstoppable.

“There is no going back. I’ve come way too far now,” Rachael says.

“My fitness has improved so much, I have much more energy and drive to achieve I my day-to-day life. I find myself jumping out of bed in the morning to get the day started.”
